Cat Symbolism: The earliest civilizations saw the link between felines and females. These ancient people created images of a priestess or Goddess flanked by great cats – lionesses and female cheetahs.
To the ancient Egyptians the cat was considered sacred to the great moon Goddess, Bastet. In classical Rome, cats were sacred to Diana, another Lunar Goddess.
Associated with women's mysteries, cats are guardians of the home and symbols of domestic fertility. The Norse Goddess of fertility, Freyja, rode in a chariot drawn by a large cat.
