In Greek myth, Arachne was a mortal woman who was a weaver of remarkable skill. She boasted she could weave even better than Athena, Goddess of war, crafts, and reason. When the Goddess heard this boast she challenged Arachne to a contest. The loser would never be allowed to touch a loom or spindle again.
Arachne wove a thin but strong web of great beauty. Athena wove a glorious tapestry depicting the gods, that was obviously more beautiful. Admitting defeat, Arachne fell into a deep despair at the loss of her art. Athena took pity on her and, with a touch of her spear, transformed Arachne into a spider so she could spin and weave to her heart's content without breaking their deal.
Symbolism: As the spider weaves its web, it reminds us that we too weave our destiny with the choices we make in our lives. The spider is also a powerful symbol of creativity and patience.
